Plain Document Starting Spell for Your First Book
A tiny, usable way to begin a book when the blank page is behaving like a formal government surface.
So you want to write a book and the plain document is sitting there in its clean white uniform. Fine. We will not summon a dynasty before breakfast.
Start tiny. One person. One problem. One change. Three possible first scenes. The file may look deeply ordinary. That is legal in all known kingdoms.
1. Choose one person, one problem, one change
Do not build the whole book yet. Pick who we stand beside, what has gone wrong, and how they might be different by the end.
Fill this in:
1. Person: someone with a normal day to ruin.
2. Problem: one thing they cannot politely ignore.
3. Change: the thing they must learn, admit, risk, or finally do.
Example:
Person: Mina, a museum night guard.
Problem: the new statue in Gallery 4 has moved three feet during her shift.
Change: Mina usually keeps quiet to stay safe. By the end, she knocks on the locked curator’s door and says, “I saw what happened to the lion. Put it back or tell me why it ran.”
That is enough to begin. No council meeting required.
2. Pick one first scene doorway
A first scene only needs to let us in. Choose the doorway that makes the next sentence easiest.
Option A, the ordinary moment interrupted:
Mina is eating vending-machine crisps at 2:13 a.m. when the motion alarm pings from Gallery 4.
Option B, the problem already happening:
Mina watches the camera feed as the stone lion slides one paw across the marble floor.
Option C, the wrong choice:
Mina deletes six seconds of footage before anyone else sees it, then hears claws scrape behind her.
Pick one. Write ten messy lines. You are allowed to change the doorway later. Doors have been coping with this for centuries.
3. Let the file look boring
Your first draft does not need a grand title, a perfect opening sentence, or a map with rivers named after grief. It needs words in a row.
Use a plain starter line:
“By the time Mina realised the statue had moved, she had already deleted the footage.”
Or even plainer:
“Mina was halfway through a packet of crisps when the alarm went off.”
Name the file something dull if that helps:
