- The detail From six in the morning until the last cinnamon bun leaves the counter, no resident may pursue a grievance inside Bellwether Bakery. Arguments can be logged on the slate by the till and resumed on the pavement after closing.
- Where it came from Forty years ago, two rival covens overturned the breakfast service while disputing a boundary hedge. Mrs. Marnie Bellwether served both parties iced buns until they signed the first Neutral Ground Notice on a flour-stained napkin.
- On the ground The front window fogs with butter and yeast, and the slate beside the till carries neat chalk entries such as “Hedge matter, pending” and “Do not sell Mr. Pike the almond twist.” A brass bell rings when somebody raises their voice above ordinary tea-shop volume.
- The friction A character can delay a confrontation by arriving before the buns sell out, but everybody sees the tactic. If their rival writes the grievance on the slate first, the wording becomes public record and may acquire several unhelpful witnesses.
- In context Nessa arrives with a carefully prepared accusation and finds Tomas already seated with a cinnamon bun, his complaint about her borrowed garden gate written on the slate in very legible chalk.
